A deep relaxing massage is useful for athletes because it aids in quicker muscle recovery after intense training session. Massages in general help ordinary people beat stress and rejuvenate tired and sore muscles. But in Sports Medicine a pre-event massage is used to stimulate blood circulation and keep ligaments, tendons, and muscles flexible, before an intense workout or athletic event.
This pre-event massage uses fast paced strokes and lots of stretching to get the blood pumping and muscle tissues ready to work effortlessly. The rapid strokes also help to mentally animate the athletes to hype them up right before a game. Interestingly the alternative medical system of Ayurveda also has a pre-exercise oil massage called Abhyanga. This is supposed to tone the muscles, boost blood circulation, and prevent injury.
