Alcohol industry marketing alcopops

The alcohol industry has been marketing sweet and fruity alcopops as safer than pure alcoholic beverages like beer, wine, whisky, rum, and vodka. But many of these alcopops contain more alcohol than beer, and some dangerously combine a stimulant like caffeine with a depressant like alcohol. Joose has both caffeine and 9.9 percent liquor; Four Loko (above) has caffeine and 12 percent liquor, Sparks Red contains 8 percent alcohol, all substantially more than most beers. Because alcohol is a depressant and caffeine is a stimulant, a mix of substances can confuse the nervous system. Rather than feeling tired after drinking booze, the caffeine causes a high, masking the feeling of intoxication.
Seattle Times

Clever marketing makes both parents and kids unaware of what kind of danger lurks in these alcopops. "One of the big trends we are seeing is with alcopops. We've had clients who don't even realize they are alcohol," said Tiffanie Ferguson, an adolescent program coordinator at Akron, Ohio's Community Health Center. Girls, in particular, love the sweet malt punch. According to the state Department of Youth and Human Services, one-third of teenage girls have tried alcopops, such as the various Smirnoff and Mike's Hard flavors.

In November, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent 27 letters to manufacturers and distributors of caffeinated alcoholic drinks, challenging them to scientifically prove that the drinks are safe. So far, the FDA has received 19 answers and is reviewing the information. A lot of alcohol abuse by girls goes undetected. And girls are more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behavior or be victimized while drunk.

Hannah Teter organic vegetarian

American snowboarder Hannah Teter won a silver medal in the women's halfpipe event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. Hannah has been snowboarding since she was nine; but she has been writing a personal diary since she was only five! This has given her something of a philosophical outlook on life. Talking to SI Teter said: "I'm giving all my contest winnings this year to Haiti, and then I have the [organic] maple syrup, Hannah's Gold, and everything from that goes to a village [Kirindon] in Kenya......A lot of people are stingy with their money, or put it into cars or houses or material things that don't matter."

Hannah is realistic about her charity work saying that she can afford to do it because of her income from endorsement contracts. "I've been blessed to have enough to buy organic and have a house in Tahoe. I know I'm going to be able to eat. This way, I can work it so that anything extra, I can give to charity."

Hannah Teter in the "Save the Seals" campaign for PETA. "When I saw that PETA was involved in saving the seals, I just was like, 'YEAH!' That's something I want to be a part of because it's such a huge massacre," she said during the photo shoot. Hannah's concern for baby seals extends to a larger love for nature. She told People, "Mom has a huge garden and fruit trees, and I love it there. When you surround yourself with nature, it's really powerful. Everything makes a difference."

Hannah Teter calls herself a healthy, organic vegetarian, and says she's grossed out by meaty junk food. "There's also a McDonald's in the athlete's village. That's so gross. When I saw that, I was like, 'I've gotta leave, I can't stay here'." She told People that eating organic vegetarian food makes her "feel stronger mentally and physically, and springier." And on what kind of food she eats, Hannah told SI: "There are so many different ways to get protein as a vegetarian, like Warrior Protein, which is all these different raw sprouted grains — it's higher protein than meat and better for you."

Hannah Teter has been doing Yoga for years, and Tai Chi. In 2004 she fractured several bones in an accident at a World Cup event in Japan; Teter credits Yoga and organic food for her recovery. Hannah posed for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition (above photo) and while admitting that some of the pics were risque, made it clear that they were not sexual at all. "I was really amped up to do that because I don't believe in the criminalization of bodies and women having to be ashamed of their bodies," Teter told Reuters. "That's just so wrong."

Mushrooms delicious and nutritious

Mushrooms are a very important part of vegetarian and vegan diets. For meat eaters who are trying to lose weight, mushrooms are a great meat substitute because they are filling, succulent, and have a delicious meaty taste. But mushrooms are popular the world over for their nutritional and medicinal qualities.

Did you know that mushroom lovers who trudge through forests, collecting, photographing and admiring mushrooms, are known as fungiphiles? That's because mushrooms naturally sprout up in the damp and shady undergrowth of forests. These are called wild mushrooms, and some of them are edible but others poisonous. In many places edible and poisonous mushrooms grow next to each other and only an expert can tell them apart.

Mushrooms are a fungus that does not need chlorophyll or sunlight, so all of their nutritional requirements come from the organic material they grow on. In forests it's decaying plant matter, and in mushroom farms it's a compost made from straw, corn cobs, peat or other organic waste. You can grow mushrooms in your home; buy mushroom spores from a gardening shop and follow the instructions. The most common varieties are Button, Oyster, Porcini, Shiitake, Chanterelle, Crimini, etc.

They all have different calories and nutritional content, but they're all delicious! Mushrooms in general are low in calories because they have only some protein and carbohydrates, but much more fiber (14%). Mushrooms are a great source of essential minerals like selenium, potassium, copper, riboflavin and niacin, and vitamin D. Certain varieties of mushroom are known to stabilize blood sugar levels by increasing levels of adiponectin; other varieties grown in Asia are aromatose inhibitors and reduce the risk of breast cancer in women!

Fragrance: chemistry business and jobs

A good fragrance is a mood elevator, attracts the opposite sex, and stimulates the taste buds. Scents are added to cakes and pastries, which are just sugar and starch, to make them more appealing. Fragrances are also added to soaps, shampoos, lotions, candles, and paints. The biggest piece of the multi-billion dollar fragrance industry pie is perfumes for women and colognes men. There are celebrity fragrances (Hilary Duff above), designer fragrances, and fragrances from beauty product companies. Such fragrances differ in their potency depending on the percentage of fragrance oil in the formula:

LIGHT Eau de cologne or body splash: The scent lasts one to two hours and has just 4% fragrance oils.

MEDIUM Eau de toilette: The scent lasts two to three hours and has a 8 to 15% potency of fragrance oils.

STRONG Eau de parfum: The scent lasts about four hours with between 15 and 22% fragrance oil strength.

VERY STRONG Parfum or perfume oil: The scent lasts between four and six hours and is the costliest form of fragrance with 22% potency.

At the molecular level aromatic compounds in plants exist in the form of oil essence; for example a flower's fragrance comes from the oils in the flower petals. But apart from floral Phytochemistry tells us that there are other categories of fragrances like fruity, oriental, chypre, green, woody, and marine. The process of extracting such oils is called hydro-distillation (steam distillation of flowers and other plant matter). The oil essence, or a blend of different oils, is then added to an alcoholic base. Modern companies began using synthetic fragrance oils, which were less expensive to make, because to get a single ounce of natural oil fragrance nearly 100 pounds of plant matter are used up.

The leading companies in the fragrance industry are Givaudan, Firmenich, International Flavors & Fragrances, Symrise, Takasago, Sensient Flavors, etc. These companies do the actual biochemical extraction, refinement, and manufacturing of the fragrance. Fragrances sold in the market are bottled, branded, and sold by other companies, some by designer labels, and some others by celebrities.

Jobs in the fragrance business are available at every level: fragrance manufacturing, marketing, and sales. At the big companies like Givaudan there are sensory scientists, chemists and molecular biologists working together. Perfumers who actually create a fragrance typically work for a fragrance brand and not the manufacturer. There are only about 300 members of the American Society of Perfumers and less than 1,000 official perfumers globally. Perfumers need highly developed olfactory nerves to memorize 1,200 biochemical aromatic compounds — and to visualize them in their mind.

A junior perfumer may start with an annual salary of $60,000, but perfumers who come up with formulas for popular fragrances can easily command six figures. You can get a bachelor's degree in chemistry, or become an apprentice to a senior perfumer for seven years, or join a school that offers perfumery courses.

Luisana Lopilato Women's Health interview

Luisana Lopilato is growing out of her teen idol image. The Argentinian actress from the hit shows Rebelde Way and Atraccion x 4 will turn 23 on May 18. She is engaged to Canadian singer Michael Bublé and is looking forward to marriage and kids with him. Luisana is a huge celebrity in her country, where she continues working on newer TV shows and movies. Meanwhile worldwide reruns of her older TV shows have made Lopilato an international icon. Two years ago Luisana Lopilato revealed her workout and diet, but last year she did the cover for Women's Health Argentina and an interview:

DIET: Luisana said, "Mostly I eat well. I have a healthy and balanced diet. My sister Daniela is a nutritionist and she taught me many things. At home you open the fridge and everything is low calorie. I do not diet but as always, just eat healthy food in right proportions." On her food temptations Lopilato said, "It's hard to say no to cakes; they are my downfall!"

Left picture, Luisana Lopilato shows off her smooth legs for a Gillette ad. Right, Luli in a Yoga-like pose. Luisana loves getting beauty treatments at spas, but at home she just wants to sleep. "I very much enjoy when I have free time. I love to sleep, is one of the things I like to do at home." Lopilato also loves reggae music because: "It makes you want to dance as soon as it begins to play.....Impossible to listen and sit still."

WORKOUT: Luisana tells Women's Health, "I'm always moving and try not to be lazy. I do half an hour daily workout with a personal trainer or go to the gym, I also play tennis. Now I have added a new activity: train to play hockey [for her movie Papá por un Día]." Previously Lopilato says that she "practiced fencing and acrobatics for my role in Alma Pirata ...... I love to learn something new."

Time to digest and time to eat

Pretty Argentinian singer and actress Luisana Lopilato munches on an apple. The juicy fruit contains vitamins, minerals, some proteins, and carbohydrates, but the fiber in apples ensures that all these goodies are not immediately pumped into your blood. It takes about an hour or two for the apple to be completely digested....but the sugars in the juice are converted instantly to energy. The rest of the carbohydrates are released as the fiber is broken down, and the body keeps getting energy bit by bit till the fruit is completely digested. Apples and most other fruits take a short time to digest and can be eaten at any time of the day. Some of the other food groups take longer and the there is a right time to eat them, fitting in with our daily schedule.

Fruits like bananas are great for the muscles because you eat them after a workout, and as the body rests and recuperates the essential nutrients like Potassium and Magnesium are released bit by bit to the muscles within an hour. But muscles also need protein, and animal flesh takes almost 10-12 hours to digest; so if you have to eat meat, chicken or fish, do it in the evening at 8 so that the protein is available to the body the next morning.

Meals which have some form of animal flesh are also heavy and leave you feeling sluggish, so they are best avoided early in the day. Protein which the body can get within a couple of hours comes from beans, peas, pulses, milk, yogurt, tofu, eggs, cereals etc. Most vegetables also take less time to digest, and are light on the digestive tract.

If you workout early morning, then start the day with some fruit juice or some other beverage like tea, which gives you energy. After the workout have a breakfast which has any mix of fruits, eggs, cereal, and milk. Even if you workout later in the day, you need these easy to digest food groups in the morning to give you energy and nutrients throughout the day. For lunch eat a salad, with or without meat, and plan a more complete, heavier meal for dinner.

Jessica Gomes Asian Latina

Jessica Gomes is milking her diverse ethnic heritage for all its worth! The Australian model has got three consecutive appearances in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, a feat not achieved even by the country's all-time great supermodel Elle "the body" Macpherson. "It's hectic. Last night we were in New York, then we flew out here to Vegas . . . and we're about to go to the launch party, the after-party then hit another red carpet tomorrow," Gomes said. "But they look after us and we all get on because the Sports Illustrated girls are always naturally beautiful, curvy, healthy and sexy - and that's what I've always wanted to be."

Interestingly Jessica is part-Portuguese and was photographed (right photo) by Stewart Shining in Lisbon, Portugal, wearing a swimsuit by diva by Keiko. This year's issue does not feature model interviews on the website, but in previous interviews the Asian Latina has said: "I like to swim nude, at night. I'm from Western Australia, and they've got some of the most beautiful beaches, and there's hardly anyone there, so that's probably the most comfortable I'd ever feel in swimming nude."

On the left, Jessica Gomes wearing a Josh Goot dress, at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit New York Launch Party, on 9th February 2010. The Perth-born Aussie tomboy has more on her plate than just Sports Illustrated promos. She just completed a series of fashion shoots in Sydney for some of Australia's best-known magazines, and has done everything from Victoria's Secret lingerie, high fashion, and campaigns for Adidas, LG, Gap, Garnier, Motorola and DKNY.

Jessica Gomes is also part-Singapore Chinese, giving her an immediate appeal for Asian audiences. What really lit the spark for Jessica's Asian appeal was the LG Bikini phone commercial in Korea. "I've always done a lot of TV commercials in Korea but this one in particular really made me popular overnight, because it's me in a bikini with a phone in my hand, so people were like, who's this Asian girl with this amazing curvy body, so I guess that's what attracted them. Ever since then, it's been really crazy. That one commercial really changed my life," Jessica told the Philippine Star.

She has her own TV show in Korea, My Name is Jessica Gomes, and she appeared in a Cass Beer commercial where she was paired with local heartthrob Lee Min Ho. In the photo above, Jessica Gomes dressed like a smart young businesswoman, at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Seoul last December releasing her fitness DVD "Jessica Gomes Body art". The workout video is a blend of Yoga, Pilates, and other stretching exercises combined with the model's weight-loss tips.

Jessica Gomes shows off her Latina side in FHM Portugal. Gomes is 5'9" tall and has a figure of 33-25-36. Apart from Yoga, Jessica is into boxing for fitness; as for her beauty regimen, Gomes says, "I have a lot of facials. I drink a lot of water. I cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize every morning and every night."

Jennifer Garner no weight pressure

37-year old Jennifer Garner at the premiere of her new movie Valentine's Day, wearing a leather and bead-embellished strapless Valentino dress and Brian Atwood pumps. Exercise equipment manufacturer Power Plate announced the "Top Ten Power Moms of 2009" list with Jennifer Garner at number one. Power Moms are those celeb women who in the last year had babies, managed successful careers, and got back into incredible postnatal shape, extremely quickly. Moms following Garner on the list were Rebecca Romijn, Heidi Klum, Elisabeth Hasslebeck, Niki Taylor, Karolina Kurkova, Molly Ringwald, Adriana Lima, Kimora Lee Simmons, and Kelly Rutherford.

Jennifer, who has a four-year old daughter Violet, and one-year old Seraphina, said she felt the pressure to lose weight after giving birth but would not diet while breastfeeding. Jennifer said: "I'm not going to starve myself because I have a baby to take care of and nourish and that's way more important than whatever my brain thinks it needs to do. I do feel pressure, but I can't make it come off any faster than it does and I can't seem to be pregnant without gaining 45 pounds, so there's not a lot I can do about it."

Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel wearing Marchesa dresses in the March 2010 issue of Marie Claire. The two actresses became friends while working together on Valentine's Day. Both Jennifer and Jessica have been known for their healthy and athletic bodies.

Jen remembers how she would get in shape for Alias and how hubby Ben is doing all the working out now: "He gets up and works out every day at 4 am before heading off to work. Every day. I used to do that sometimes for Alias.....but not every day. And I'd do it for 30 minutes, maybe 45. He does it for an hour-and-a-half."

Pink packs a punch!

After her acrobatic performance of Glitter in the Air at the 2010 Grammy Awards, singer Pink went on Oprah and said: "It was a good night for me. I was a gymnast for eight years and I love acrobatics. I've always seen dancers do that behind the singer but I'd never seen the singer do it. I was like, Well, why can't I do it and sing? And I wanted to get all the famous people wet."

During the performance, regarded the best at the event, the star climbed into a white sheet and was lifted into the air high above the crowd at The Staples Centre in Los Angeles. While Pink twirled in mid air, water began to pour from above, soaking her and the audience. Pink always packs in some stunts and athletic moves in her performances when on tour. In the January issue of Women's Health, Pink said that her muscular body, and the six pack on her flat tummy, comes from years of gymnastics training: "I was a gymnast for eight years, from ages 4 to 12. My body was made before my bones were fully grown. Gymnasts are short, stocky, muscular powerhouses."

In the magazine Pink rated her body at 7.5, confessing that she has always been self-conscious because of her height of 5'3": "If they figure out how to stretch me and make me a little bit taller, then maybe I'll get upwards of eight."

On her workout Pink says cardio is all important, not the least because she is Asthmatic and needs to improve lung capacity. "So usually, I wake up and do an hour of cardio, then an hour of P90X or Yoga.....I do that six days a week." Like Jessica Simpson, these workouts also helped Pink recover from her previous break-up with motocross racer Carey Hart. "You've got to make yourself feel good at times like that. Even if it's a pain in the a** and you hate working out, the endorphins and the stress you bring down [help]. You feel strong, healthy."

At a young age she picked up the awful habit of smoking, but hates it today and is cutting back. To look ripped and toned for her performances Pink keeps calories down by eating tofu or shrimp instead of chicken for protein. Sushi is her favorite food but when she needs to cut carbs she has sashimi instead (raw thinly sliced fish served without rice). Pink substitutes buttery sauce on pasta with truffle oil and wholewheat penne and roasted mushrooms, and she eats essential veggies like celery with peanut butter.

Organic milk hormone free and ethical

Milk is essential for kids, and more so for girls, who need to build strong bones before they enter their 30s. Sadly most packaged milk comes from big companies who run factory farms and resort to unethical and unhealthy practices to boost milk production. Cows are injected with Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) to yield higher volumes of milk by stimulating the pituitary gland. Animal rights activists say that mechanized milking of cattle can tear the udders and cause pus to enter the milk. Cows are packed in restricted spaces, forcibly separated from their calves, and ill-treated by workers who resort to hitting, kicking, and electric-shocking both mother and offspring! Fortunately there is a healthier and ethical alternative in organic milk.

Pretty Angie Harmon with her her three cute daughters promoting cow's milk last year: "As a mom, it's important to me that my kids learn healthy habits early -- and drinking three glasses of lowfat or fat free milk each day is one of the best habits I can pass on to them." In an interview with Shape magazine, Angie had talked of her fitness routine with her family, which included bike rides, swimming, hiking, and jumping on the trampoline. Harmon also said that she makes sure her family sticks to an all-organic diet....she didn't make it clear in this ad whether her kids drink regular packaged milk or organic milk?

Organic milk is produced using only natural ingredients. Cows can feed on natural pastures with fresh grass, or on naturally procured feed that is free from artificial supplements and additives. They are also kept in a chemical-free environment and not injected with hormones or antibiotics. In the United States the organic milk business is worth nearly $1.5 billion a year. Organic milk costs more (in the UK organic milk is 20% more expensive than conventional milk) but is in greater demand because of its health benefits. Organic milk contains higher levels of essential Omega oils than conventional milk. Dairy producers also cut production costs by 22% if they switch to organic.
