Writing in the San Antonio Express-News Doctor Mehmet Oz and Doctor Michael Roizen say that one of the biggest mistakes people make is to pig out in the Holiday Season, thinking that they can burn off that weight gain by launching a diet and exercise program in January. "A month of gluttony will only dig you in deeper," the doctors explain. Their top ten tips for sensible eating in the holidays:
1. Take the focus off of food. Turn candy and cookie making time into time for decorating the house. Plan group activities not related to food.
2. Every day is a new day. If you overeat at one meal, don't be hard on yourself. Just remember that it takes 3,500 calories to gain a pound, so make it up the next day by getting back on the program.
3. Increase exercise on big meal days to ensure that you stay within your calorie limits for the day.
4. Offer to bring your own healthy dish to a group meal.
5. Survey the spread. Take inventory of the food offered before piling the food on your plate. Choose favorite foods and skip your least favorite food. Include vegetables and fruit to make the plate balanced.
6. Caution with alcohol. Alcohol is filled with hidden empty calories. Choose water first to quench your thirst and then alternate alcohol and water the rest of the evening.
7. Avoid mindless eating while in the kitchen. Chew gum while you cook to avoid extra test tastings.
8. Make a plate. When you're hungry, avoid munching on leftovers out of the refrigerator, make a plate and sit down at the table to enjoy it.
9. Plan your treats. If you have decided that you want a special sweet treat at this party then make a plan to enjoy it when the time comes.
10. Keep a log. Staying mindful of what you eat is a great way to stay on track. Choose a notebook or something that is easy to carry with you and write down what you eat.
