Walking five kilometers for cancer research

Cute Jessica Alba at the 14th Annual Entertainment Industry Foundation's Revlon Run/Walk For Women, at Times Square, New York on Apr 30 2011. The annual event, which helps raise money for breast and ovarian cancer research, drew more than 20,000 people. They were walking or running five kilometers, which began in Times Square and ended in Central Park. Revlon CEO and President Allan Ennis said, "Over the years Revlon has helped to raise over $65 million to help fight this disease and it goes to finding a cure, treatment, mammagrophy testing, the works."

Jessica Alba had a visible baby bump under her oversized Revlon EIF event T-shirt as she happily delivered her speech on stage, posting later on her twitter: "The energy here @revlon run/walk is amazing 20,000 people are here to participate. This is 14th year & we've raised over $60million for women’s cancer!" Other famous faces walking or running at the event, included Dr. Mehmet Oz, actress Jessica Biel, and talk show host Jimmy Fallon.

As expected, the athletic and curvy Jessica Biel was running most of the five kilometers. Both Alba and Biel are regulars at the annual fundraiser. In an interview with Runner's World, Dr. Oz said that he had run several New York marathons with a best time of 4 hours. Number one on the doctor's list of things to stay healthy is walking: "walk 30 minutes a day. You don't have to do that at the end of the day, you can make a part of what you do everyday, like use the stairs instead of an elevator, but 30 minutes of extra walking than you normally do everyday."

Sporty girls

An age old question: do guys like sporty girls or girly girls? Most guys will like girls that can have fun playing and just keeping up with guys. But not those who are uber competitive and beat them at their own game! Sporty athletic girls are generally in good shape, more confident and have good posture, but guys can be put off by girls who are a little too ripped. And they may not like girls who can't turn off the sporty look in fashion; those who wear sweats, loose tees, and trainers even when they're not playing or working out! So guys like girls who look sexy and feminine, but are sporty enough to have fun with.

Studies show that girls who are seriously into sport have less sex than non-athletes, they also lose their virginity later, and have fewer sex partners. This reduces their risk for unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Bethany Hamilton, the surfing sensation on whom the new movie Soul Surfer is based, admitted in an interview that as a teenager she was not interested in the opposite sex. “All my friends are sporty girls. None of us are into boys too much,” Bethany told The Times in 2003.

Beachwear

Brenda Song of The Suite Life, Aly Michalka of Hellcats, Kat Graham of The Vampire Diaries model bright and pretty beach wear in the fun summer campaign for beachwear brand OP.

Beachwear is different from swimwear, and not everyone who goes to the beach is swimming, surfing, or getting a tan. So why do we have to wear swimsuits or bikinis to look sexy? A cute pair of shorts and a skimpy top reveals just enough of the body to attract attention, but not from weirdos and perverts! And if you're gonna be at the beach for a long time use sunscreen and wear hats for sun protection.

Kristen Bell loves animals

Kristen Bell on 'The Tonight Show' with Jay Leno on Tuesday wearing a leopard print Sea New York dress. The actress talked about her upcoming TV show House of Lies, and her cameo in the highly anticipated Scream4, in theaters Friday. But the long time vegetarian was most excited about the time she spent with wild animals: tagging sharks to save them and the oceanic environment, and getting up close with giraffes at the famous Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya.

Before her memorable role Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 31-year old Kristen Bell became popular with teens in the TV series Veronica Mars. In fact the 5'2" tall actress was playing a schoolgirl when she was actually 25 years old! "All my life I've looked five to 10 years younger than I am......And I have a Peter Pan complex: I don't want to grow up!" Bell told Giant magazine.

Kristen Bell also loves pet animals and has three dogs. Last year she started an organic garden with fruit, herbs, and veggies. "Now that I have all this fresh mint growing in my garden, I make lemonade mint slushies. I start by squeezing fresh lemon juice into a blender, then add chopped mint, a little agave nectar to neutralize the sour, and a lot of ice. Delicious, healthy, and refreshing!"

Kristen Bell in last year's Shape magazine. The vegetarian star tries to limit her dairy consumption but confesses to having a sweet tooth: "If I can burn 10 calories by avoiding the elevator, I'm all for it. More flights of stairs means I can eat more candy!" For her fitness Kristen goes hiking, walking with her dogs, and Yoga, which also clears up her head. "Do meditative yoga for 10 minutes every morning. When you have a problem — whether it's road rage, your guy, or work — meditation allows everything to unfold the way it's supposed to."

Gym etiquette for beginners

Every gym or health club has its own set of rules for members, but there is a common etiquette for sharing space and using equipment while doing yoga, aerobics, or weight training:

Appearance - the girl in this photo is a fitness model, but most beginners at a gym will not come dressed in just small shorts and a sports bra. It's distracting for other members. And you can't concentrate on your workout if other people are ogling you. Putting on perfume and too much makeup is another no-no for gym etiquette; it's not a dating center and the overpowering scent of perfumes in a closed space is extremely off-putting.

Respecting space - in group classes like aerobics, pilates, or yoga, you need to maintain a reasonable distance from the next person for the sake of safety.

Wiping off sweat - you are bound to sweat in cardiovascular or strength exercises, and some of that sweat will drip down on the equipment your are sitting on or gripping with your thighs. It can be gross for the person using that equipment after you. So carry a towel with you and wipe the machines down when you're finished. Most gyms offer wipes or sprays for this purpose.

No cell phones - the worst in gym etiquette is people using their cell phones to chat or text in between sets of exercises. There may be another person who could use that equipment while you catch your breath.

Don't be bullied - you may be a beginner but don't act like one. Don't take any other member's advice on how to do an exercise properly; and most gym employees too are not qualified to offer fitness training. So do your own research on what exercises to do before joining a gym. And don't be afraid of letting other people know proper gym etiquette!

Ashley Greene glamour girl

Pretty Ashley Greene in the May 2011 issue of Glamour magazine, welcoming Spring in her bright and colorful Dolce & Gabbana top with Louis Vuitton shorts. The Twilight girl posted on her Twitter: "So excited to be on the May cover of Glamour! Pick up a copy on stands April 5th." In the interview Glamour asked Greene: "So what about messy Hollywood, like the partying and drugs?"

Ashley replied: "I keep to the ground rules. I'm not going to get drunk at a bar. There are younger girls who look up to me. So I do my best not to stray too far." Talking to InStyle Hair about her own teen years Ashley Greene said, "I got really self-conscious because I had older friends. I thought they were prettier, and they were going through all these life experiences before I was." Modeling classes, she says in the magazine (out April 8), gave her more confidence. Talking about getting pretty for the big screen, glamour girl Ashley says: "I love having my hair and makeup done, but I'm really just a 15-minute girl, throwing everything on with no fuss."

Running shoe fads and foot injuries

Modern running shoes come with expensive features like microchips, thrust enhancers, and air cushions. With all these fads and thick soles, running shoes are supposed to cushion our feet and prevent foot injuries, but over the last two decades runners have reported increased injuries. Dr Daniel Lieberman, professor of biological anthropology at Harvard University, says, "A lot of foot and knee injuries currently plaguing us are caused by people running with shoes that actually make our feet weak. Until 1972, when the modern athletic shoe was invented, people ran in very thin-soled shoes, had strong feet and had a much lower incidence of knee injuries."

One of the latest running shoes fads is the "minimal shoe", which is basically a sock-like covering on the foot with sleeves for each toe. It provides the bare minimum protection to the soles and gives athletes the experience of running barefoot. But Dr Naven Duggal, an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess says he's seen a number of cases of sprains and strains from runners using these new minimal shoes. The reason of course is that in this age of specialization people need just the right kind of shoe for their kind of foot, which is determined with a "wet test".

Get your feet wet, then stand on a surface that will leave an imprint. If you have a normal arch, there will be a distinct curve along the inside of your foot with a band half the width of your foot connecting the heel and toe. If you have this arch type, choose a stability running shoe with a semi-curved shape. If your imprint shows almost the entire foot, you have flat feet and are more likely to roll too far inward on your foot strike while running (overpronating). If your foot imprint shows a thin band between your heel and toe, this indicates you have high arches that will make you roll more outward instead (supinating). In both these cases you need to visit a specialty running shoe store to get the right shoes.

Strictly Come Dancing 2010 winner Kara Tointon had running as part of her fitness training for the dancing competition. She told Health & Fitness magazine: "Have your gait assessed properly before a race. It made a world of difference to my running, because I'm quite flat-footed — but don't let the Strictly judges know that! I wear the Newton Running Distance U trainers." You also need different kinds of shoes if you're running on a flat surface or doing cross-country. Road running shoes are light and flexible, while for trail running you need shoes with gripping soles thick enough to fend off roots and rocks. Running shoes should be changed after every 500-1000 miles of use, depending on your size and the running surface you mostly use.
