Yoga balance on water

Standup paddleboarding is one of the fastest-growing water sports. Yoga is one of the most popular forms of exercise. Some years ago these two disciplines were combined and a new fitness trend emerged, doing yoga poses while balancing on a paddleboard in the water. Many yoga studios offer SUP Yoga classes. Below, professional standup paddleboard racer Gillian Gibree, wearing a Lululemon Athletica tank and Hotdrop shorts, in the June 2013 issue of Yoga Journal:

Gillian Gibree also happens to be a vinyasa yoga teacher in San Diego, here doing the low lunge yoga pose and incorporating the paddle into the pose for an extra workout on her shoulders. For better balance on the water Gillian needs to tuck in her toes and get a workout for the muscles in her feet. Gibree says she started experimenting with yoga poses on her paddleboard in 2009, "You're out in the elements and have a total connection to nature. It's so relaxing and meditative. It feels amazing.....Doing yoga on a surface that is constantly in motion fires up your core muscles and strengthen muscles that aren't even called on in everyday practice."

SUP Yoga has been gaining in popularity since 2011 and is best for people who already have experience in both yoga and paddleboarding. You get a nice warmup paddleboarding out into the water. Balance and alignment of yoga poses is pretty tough, but falling into the water is fun and refreshing! Actress and yoga practitioner Jennifer Aniston has been spotted performing SUP Yoga.
